UK Microsoft-Activision Decision Hurts Consumers

It’s hard to draw a roadmap to a place no one has ever been. Yet that’s what the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is trying to do in blocking Microsoft’s acquisition of game-maker Activision. The regulator forecasted that cloud computing is the future of gaming, that Microsoft and Activision will be significant providers of such gaming, and that the merged company would raise prices for and limit customer access to Activision’s popular games.

Those are pretty specific forecasts to treat with such certainty. Venture capitalists should be so talented! And if the CMA is right, then Epic Games’ case against Apple seems frivolous.

The reality is that the gaming industry never stands still. And any forecast, even if right, is good only for a short few years.
