Can satellites be used to expand broadband? A conversation with Patrick Masambu.

As you race to help your country expand broadband, you undoubtedly hear from companies like Elon Musk’s Starlink telling you that they are the solution to many of your challenges. Are they right? Do their Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services really compete well with fiber optics or 5G? What do LEO providers need from regulators to be able to provide their services?

Patrick Masambu, Director General of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (ITSO), took part in the new PURC Refresher Series to address these and other issues with using LEOs as broadband solutions. Patrick has been with the ITSO since 2010. Previously he held several top-level management positions in Uganda’s telecommunications sector, including being the founding Chief Executive of the Uganda Communications Commission and Managing Director of Uganda Telecom Limited.
