BABA General Studies Specialization: Health Administration

The health administration (HA) program is designed to prepare business students to work in the health care industry. Health care facilities need business savvy managers with skills in finance, strategy, human resources, information technology, and management. Health administrators work with doctors, nurses, and technicians to successfully and efficiently run hospitals, surgical centers, nursing homes and clinics. Some health administrators manage entire facilities while others manage departments or units within a facility. This specialization will teach students the fundamentals of health administration in preparation for a career or advanced degree in the health industry. Requirements

Students must complete each of the following courses (12 credits) with a minimum 3.0 area of specialization GPA. Although there are no pre-requisites for these courses, students are advised to take HSA 3111 in advance of taking HSC 4930 and HSC 4191.   • HSA 3111 US Healthcare System
    This course introduces essential topics surrounding the delivery of health care in the United States and internationally. The initial focus will be on the evolution of the US health care system and the system’s historical foundations. From there, models and concepts about the determinants of health will be introduced. These tools will provide a framework to understand and critically assess the health care delivery system and the challenges faced by the present structure. Finally, the US Government’s involvement (i.e., state and federal) and the role of health care providers will be examined in relation to health care reform and the future of the US health care system.
  • PHC 4101 Public Health Concepts
    This is an upper-level course intended to introduce undergraduate students in a variety of disciplines to the basic tenets and applications of public health, including integrating public health with other health professions. This course explores the Nation’s health challenges, the scientific basis of the public’s health in the United States, and current strategies for advancing the public’s health.
  • HSC 4930 Special Topics: Health Economics
    This course introduces the student to economic theories and concepts and microeconomic analysis and some of its empirical applications including analyses of the demand for and supply of healthcare goods and services. This course also introduces the concepts and methods for the economic analysis of health care decision alternatives. Topics will include demand and supply for health and healthcare, health insurance, information economics, economics of health innovation, health policy, public health economics, behavioral health economics, cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness, and cost-utility analyses. It emphasizes the application of these methods to the evaluation of alternative health programs.
  • HSA 4191 Health Informatics
    This course provides a fundamental understanding of health informatics, healthcare information systems, and emerging healthcare technologies, starting with the core informatics competencies and the foundation of knowledge model. Key topics will include cognitive science, legal and ethical aspects, HIPAA privacy and security regulations, systems development life cycle, electronic security, electronic health records, patient engagement, community health, telehealth, data mining, IT certifications, evidence-based practice, and translational research. The course will also provide an in-depth look at current technologies to include wearable sensor-based systems for health monitoring and prognosis and the use of mobile health (mHealth) applications in the medical and healthcare sectors to gain an understanding of their emerging role in health informatics.
