University of Florida Warrington College of Business launches new program for first-generation business students
First-generation students are often among the first in their families to navigate the college experience, learning everything including academic and professional expectations in real time.
To help those students access resources, build connections and navigate the business college with confidence, the University of Florida Warrington College of Business launched Warrington First-Gen Fellows.
The eight-week program brings together first-generation business students through professional development workshops and community-building opportunities. The program includes fellows and facilitators, creating opportunities for first-generation students to learn from peers who have already navigated many of the same experiences.
For Itala Derteano (BSBA Marketing ’29), joining the program helped her feel supported, seen and heard during her first year at UF.

“Being a fellow was important to me because it gave me the opportunity to connect with students who share similar backgrounds, and to learn from upperclassmen who have already navigated the college experience,” Derteano said.
As a fellow, she attended weekly sessions focused on leadership development, networking and navigating the college environment.
For Derteano, the experience helped her grow personally and professionally while introducing her to peers who understood the experience and unique challenges of being a first-generation student.
“I’ve always had a passion for business, and the University of Florida gives me the opportunity to turn that passion into a successful career,” said Derteano. “I’ve learned so much through those couple weeks, I can’t wait to share and help more first-generation students next year.”

Priya Patel (BABA International Studies ’27), served as a facilitator, helping develop workshops and lead discussions for fellows, like Derteano.
“[The program] provides an opportunity for first-gen students to have a network and community that is made for them and invests in their ability to navigate college experiences and the business school as a whole,” Patel said.
Being a facilitator was rewarding for Patel, allowing her to mentor and lead her peers.
“I was able to see firsthand the impact I was making on students while they learned how to understand what being a business student means,” she said.
Next year, Patel will serve as a program director.

The program is led by Melissa Forgione, associate director of academic and career advising in the Heavener School of Business.
“All students deserve to have the resources and tools for success coming to the University of Florida,” Forgione said. “Let’s help [first-generation students] utilize those resources in ways that work for them and help them get connected and acclimated to the Warrington College of Business, so they’re not feeling behind their peers.”
The inaugural launch included 20 fellows and facilitators. The program will return this fall for another eight-week session, continuing its mission of helping first-generation students build community, develop professionally and confidently navigate their academic journeys at Warrington.
