Let’s do business better

More than a mission statement, corporate responsibility informs all organizational levels and relationships to uplift communities, preserve our world and maintain transparency.

This always-evolving code of ethics shapes the full spectrum of operations: hiring and training, compliance and risk management, sustainability, people and resource management, product design, technology use and marketing. But beyond policy and quality control, entry-level staff to executives uphold a culture of honesty and accountability by evaluating the impact of their decisions before taking action.

The Warrington College of Business’ Elizabeth B. & William F. Poe, Sr. Business Ethics Center promotes this mindset across the University of Florida community, exposing undergraduate and graduate students to ethical, responsible leadership through courses and activities.

Yet, ethics — including what they are and how to best implement and maintain them — remain a point of debate across the global marketplace. To draw attention to this increasingly visible, all-encompassing discipline, our center introduces new perspectives through our research and invites leaders to discuss how they run a socially responsible, profitable enterprise.

Through these collective efforts, our center’s dynamic and influential forum produces conscientious, strategic professionals who act with integrity and respect their fellow human beings, no matter their position or field.

What we do

What’s the carbon footprint of AI? How closely are safety protocols followed along a supply chain? How accurate is an advertisement? As you contemplate these and similar questions, our center’s scholarship and resources provide a framework for making sound decisions.

About our center

You’ve heard the phrase “people over profits.” But what does it look like, and how is it enforced? Believing ethics to be integral to a productive market system, the Poe Center seeks to define, elevate, and exemplify its tenets within Warrington and the wider business community.

Our mission

As the impetus behind our center’s objectives, business serves society when the individuals presiding over operations accept responsibility, honor their commitments, deal honestly and respect the dignity and integrity of all parties — whether employees, clients, or community members.

Our approach

A blend of scholarship, academic instruction, and real-world context establishes the importance of conducting business responsibly, identifies the deeper results of decisions, and cultivates professionals ready to create an ethics-rooted culture.

Business ethics courses

Recruiters look beyond skills and experience to character, preferring to hire thoughtful individuals who understand how to work on teams, analyze complex problems and communicate their ideas. Helping to produce these well-rounded candidates, our center’s courses equip students to ascertain the true effect of a decision.

Student perspectives

Chris Ferrante

My involvement with the Poe Center opened my eyes to the very real integrity issues that business leaders face in the global marketplace. The visiting speakers offered a wealth of experience and knowledge that provided me with another education I could not have received in the classroom.

Ariela Steinberg

As I interviewed for positions in finance and consulting, the one thing companies seem to look for over and over is candidates with the experience and ability to own projects. … As a Business Ethics Ambassador, I experienced professional-level responsibility and accountability while still in college. The organization truly acted as a stepping stone and transition from ‘backpack’ to ‘briefcase.’
