Business Journalist in Residence

The University of Florida Business Journalist in Residence program invites leading business and economics reporters to UF to meet with business and journalism students, engage with researchers in their beat area, and present on their expertise to students, staff, faculty, and the community. The Business Journalist in Residence program is organized and supported by the Warrington College of Business and the College of Journalism and Communications.

Peter S. Goodman, global economics correspondent for The New York Times and author of How the World Ran Out of Everything: Inside the Global Supply Chain, will give a public talk on campus titled “The Reemergence of Place in Global Business.”

Goodman’s talk will draw on his reporting to discuss the end of an era in which we pretended that it made no difference whether a factory was in Ohio or in China, so long as it was connected to the Internet and within reach of transportation. With a new focus on domestic supply chains and manufacturing, those old assumptions are being rapidly questioned.

Goodman has spent more than 25 years covering how global economic forces shape the lives of ordinary people. His reporting spans over 50 countries and covers some of the most consequential economic shifts of the modern era — from the rise of China as a superpower and the 2008 financial crisis to the ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China. He is a two-time Gerald Loeb Award winner and the author of three books, including the best-selling Davos Man: How the Billionaires Devoured the World. The presentation is part of the Business Journalist in Residence program, which brings leading reporters to campus to share expertise and foster connections between academia and the newsroom.

Become a Business Journalist in Residence

Candidates are selected by a committee of UF faculty and administrators and invited several months in advance of their appearance. Visiting business journalists receive an honorarium and all travel expenses are covered.
