Why earn a DBA degree from Warrington?
What factors prevent a business from maximizing its profits or making its operations more efficient? Which conditions are conducive to entrepreneurial success — and what holds small business owners back? As a student in the University of Florida Warrington College of Business’s Doctor of Business Administration program, you’ll tackle these questions quantitatively, first by elevating your research skills to the peer-reviewed journal level and then by deploying them to develop and present a dissertation.
Guided by our faculty researchers, the DBA program was formed in response to a conundrum affecting the business world: Practitioners and scholars have not traditionally shared their knowledge. DBA students transform into this ever-vital link through rigorous coursework, independent research and classroom discussions enriched by peers’ experiences in academia or industry.
Our students harness their findings to pursue one of four career paths: pivoting to faculty roles after years in the corporate world, delivering accurate forecasting and detailed proposals as senior leaders and executives, moving from instruction to academic administration, or offering strategic perspectives as consultants.
In any direction, you arrive as a respected thought leader — equipped to structure your own studies, adept at analyzing your own data, and prepared to present it to publications and top stakeholders.

What’s the economic impact of a poorly managed airport? DBA students contemplate these types of questions and conduct research to arrive at their conclusions.
About the Doctor of Business Administration degree
As a student in this professional doctoral program, you’ll integrate theory, business practices, and applied research to dive deeper into current issues and uncover novel, actionable solutions. This is achieved through:
- An on-campus format fitting around your career and obligations: You’ll attend two immersive weekend residencies per term at the University of Florida’s Gainesville campus, held on a Friday, Saturday and into Sunday. Curriculum, including five quantitative courses, span the first six terms. Your research begins during your third fall term, and activity intensifies over the program’s last year in preparation for your dissertation and defense during your final summer.
- Accomplished classmates: Seasoned minds inspire each other to do — and discover — more. Your cohort, comprising about 25-30 professionals, creates an engaging, stimulating environment, with each member bringing at least 10 years of insights from mid- to upper-management, the C-suite, academia or the military.
- A high level of faculty interaction: You’ll improve how you conduct research and flesh out your proposal with input from some of the best and brightest minds in business. To quantify this, DBA Faculty Director Phil Podsakoff’s publications have amassed a record-making 100,000-plus scholarly citations.
- Dissertation: Your dissertation gradually takes shape, progressing from a question related to accounting, finance, management, marketing, information systems and operations management, or artificial intelligence into a proposal and, eventually, a paper you defend to a faculty committee.
Tuition assistance
Where else can you grow your knowledge while networking with executives and other high-ranking professionals?
Warrington’s DBA program delivers these benefits in an enriching, immersive and collaborative on-campus environment. Take advantage of the following to direct your next career stage:
- Military benefits: Advance the ranks in the military or make the transition to civilian life with a degree that reflects your drive and expertise. Whether on active duty or a veteran, 25% of DBA students and alumni have applied GI benefits toward their tuition and other program expenses. For more information about using the Post-9/11 GI Bill® and other benefits, read about UF’s process for military tuition assistance or email Gus Kreatsoulas.
- Employer tuition assistance: Because your success is their success, many employers offer to offset the costs of attending Warrington’s DBA program.
- State of Florida tuition discount: Although our program does not qualify for the State of Florida Employee Education Program, we do offer a discount (applied to tuition only) for State of Florida employees with at least 12 months of consecutive service. Contact Karen Ehlers for information.
DBA vs. Ph.D.
In the 2000s, Warrington identified a concerning trend: Colleges and universities might soon require more business faculty, but Ph.D. candidates were not graduating at the same rate.
Enter our DBA, a three-year terminal degree program rooted in the intense scholarly pursuits of our Ph.D. but open to, and structured around, the lives of business executives, directors, and academics. When launched over a decade ago, the DBA was intent on producing the optimal business school instructor: a creative, resolute scholar drawing upon extensive real-world experience who would teach, take on administrative duties and lead research initiatives.
Through continual assessments, the program evolved to additionally graduate practitioner-scholars ready to steer their respective public, private, academic, military or entrepreneurial organizations through unsurpassed methodological and analytical skills.
Today, our DBA and Ph.D. programs serve two distinct audiences interested in researching complex questions that advance how organizations do business:
- Our DBA program: The typical DBA candidate has spent the last decade or more in a management or academic role and either aims to transition to academia or strengthen their strategic decision-making skills. Their dissertation centers around a topic directly related to business operations, processes, markets or trends. They also seek an advanced degree building from their master’s that they can earn around their work schedule and other professional and personal commitments.
- Our Ph.D. programs: Our Ph.D. candidates, who have historically just completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree, strive to develop new or evolve existing business theories, crafting studies with the potential to influence business education and operations on a broad scale. These individuals expect to fully focus on their research and apply to Warrington’s programs with either a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
How to apply to our DBA program
The DBA program strives for a small, select group of experienced executives (upper-middle management to C-suite positions) or academics seeking a terminal degree who are committed to pursuing a formal, rigorous program as practitioner-scholars.
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degree.
- Business experience: undergraduate or (preferably) master’s-level courses and a minimum (preferably) of 10 years of experience in a managerial capacity or academia.
- A statement of purpose (400-600 words) that explains how the DBA aligns with your future goals and describes your research interests in depth.
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae covering all post-high school education and employment, international affiliations, research funding, and publications.
- Two or more letters of recommendation from an academic or professional reference in the following format: two pages/5-6 paragraphs long in which the reference introduces themselves and the applicant, including how long and in which capacity they have known the applicant; the applicant’s skills and qualities, with emphasis on analytical abilities, subject knowledge, and research abilities; and why they recommend the applicant for the DBA program.
- Unofficial or official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. Send electronically or mailed in a sealed, signed, and unopened envelope to Graduate Admissions.
- $30 application fee.
- International Applicants: The UF DBA cannot issue F1 visas because we are not a full-time program. If you are a potential international applicant, please contact an advisor at the UF International Center.
DBA for a Day
Is the DBA program the compass your career needs? Beyond information sessions, you can spend a day attending lectures with first- and second-year candidates, meeting faculty, and joining social events to confirm your decision.
Ideation to dissertation
Identify an issue
At the end of your second fall term, you’ll submit a paper presenting a proposed topic and the current research that both supports your potential thesis and shows gaps in existing literature. You’ll also be matched to a faculty advisor at this stage.
Question and quantify
In the fall term of your third year, you’ll present your oral proposal to a doctoral committee and present how you intend to investigate and the research methodologies you’ll use.
Dissertation. Done.
As you focus your last year on your research, one to two graduate faculty members will supervise your activity as you gear up and begin writing up your research. Your efforts culminate with the defense of your dissertation in the final term.

Student testimonial
Ironically, just as I was finishing my DBA and preparing to graduate after defending my dissertation, I was approached about a CEO role at a national association representing higher education members. I don’t know if the DBA was a deciding factor, but it certainly didn’t hurt as I went through a long interview process and got the job.
