Things To Do
Visit The Swamp: Check out Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, home to the Florida Gators football team. It was nicknamed The Swamp by former head coach Steve Spurrier in 1992. Athletic success is nothing new at the University of Florida, and The Swamp has hosted national championship teams in 1996, 2006 and 2008.
Butterfly Rainforest: Located on campus at the University of Florida, the Butterfly Museum allows guests to walk through a large, enclosed room featuring hundreds of free-flying butterflies and birds from around the world. It also showcases turtles and fish with a lush landscape of tropical trees and colorful plants with waterfalls and a walking path.
Explore Paynes Prairie: This state park hosts alligators, bison, horses and more than 270 species of birds. The 50-foot observation tower at the visitor centers gives a panoramic view of the preserve, and there are many walking trails throughout the park.
See the Bat Houses at Sunset: Bats break out of their home in a span of 15-20 minutes following sunset. There are an estimated 300,000 bats in this colony, and it provides a unique setting when they come out of their home for the night.
Discover Devil’s Millhopper: This unique experience features a sinkhole that is 120 feet deep. The wooden path leads guests to the bottom of it, and beaten paths allow walking around it. It’s a vibrant setting for animal life and vegetation.
Head to the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo: A unique 10-acre experience at Santa Fe College, this is one of only two teaching zoos in the nation. It hosts 75 different species of animals and is maintained by over 200 students.
Travel the Hawthorne Trail: This 16-mile trail goes through many parts of Paynes Prairie. It’s designed for walking, cycling and horseback riding.
Enjoy Celebration Pointe: Relax outside in the beautiful Promenade, go shopping, or take in a movie at a luxury theater with recliners and a lobby complete with a full bar at Celebration Pointe.
Eat Something Good: The Gainesville area is home to a wide variety of dining experiences that will satisfy all appetites, from local favorites to national restaurants.
