Gary McGill named Warrington Interim Dean as Saby Mitra departs
Following six years under Dean Saby Mitra, the Warrington College of Business will begin a new chapter of leadership as Gary McGill assumes the role of Interim Dean on August 1, 2026. Mitra was selected to serve as dean at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School.
Under Mitra’s leadership, Warrington expanded its graduate footprint across Florida, became a national leader in AI business education, strengthened its financial position and maintained its national rankings among the best online programs.
As current Senior Associate Dean and one of the nation’s leading accounting educators, McGill brings extensive academic and administrative experience and institutional knowledge to the interim role.
“Gary has devoted four decades to advancing Warrington’s mission, and there is no doubt he will be a fantastic leader for the college during this transition,” said Mitra. “His experience and unwavering commitment to our students, faculty, staff and alumni give me every confidence that Warrington will continue its strong momentum. Serving as dean of Warrington is an extraordinary privilege, and as I begin my new opportunity, I know the college will continue to thrive and remain well positioned for continued success with Gary at the helm.”
McGill will serve in the role for at least a three-year term to provide stability to the college. During his time leading Warrington, McGill will prioritize expanding the culture of in-person engagement among the college’s undergraduates, improving experiences for all graduate students – particularly those that take place outside the formal classroom – and continuing support to retain and attract world-class scholars.
“We have some of the best students, faculty and staff in the world,” said McGill. “Building on our strong foundations and history is a challenge that we enthusiastically accept.”
McGill has been a member of the college’s faculty for 40 years, having joined the Fisher School of Accounting as an assistant professor in 1986. Most recently, he has led the college as Senior Associate Dean and Hough Graduate School Director since 2021.
McGill began his career in professional practice as a CPA in Dallas, Texas, his hometown, before earning his Ph.D. at Texas Tech University. After joining the Fisher School of Accounting faculty, he served as the coordinator of the accounting Ph.D. program from 2002 to 2006 and as the longest serving Director of the Fisher School of Accounting from 2006-2026.
McGill holds the J. Roy Duggan Endowed Professorship. As a faculty member, he has published over 65 journal articles, book chapters, or research reports, co-authored six books and has received numerous teaching awards at UF. McGill has been a frequent lecturer on international tax, federal tax, and accounting for income taxes for academic, professional, and government organizations, including providing invited testimony to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee hearings on Enron.
