Macquarie University, is a public university founded in 1964 in Sydney, Australia and located in a 310 acre park approximately 10 miles north-west of Sydney’s central business district. The university enrolls close to 33,000 students and the Faculty of Business enrolls 5,100 undergraduates. In addition, Macquarie University’s exchange programs are very active; the university has over 200 international partners from more than 50 countries. UF students are assured of meeting students from all over the world if they select to study abroad at Macquarie.

The City

Sydney is the most populous city in Australia with approximately 5 million residents. Because the city is close to the ocean, temperatures are moderate. The warmest month of the year is January with an average temperature of 80 degrees (Fahrenheit). The Sydney Harbour is home to the iconic Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. In addition, the city features many notable parks, including Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Not far from the city, visitors will find the world famous Bondi and Manly beaches. Sydney's coastline is part of the annual humpback whales migration path from Antarctica to the Coral Sea and during mid-May to early December whales are often seen in coastal waters and on some rare occasions even in Sydney Harbour itself.

Student Life

Macquarie University’s main campus is located in Sydney, Australia with a plethora of facilities and amenities available to all students. The Macquarie University Sport and Aquatic Center has two heated swimming pools along with a gymnasium which includes free weights, machines and a cardio theatre. Health services for students on campus include doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, pharmacists, counselors and a new hospital. Students can enjoy a non-denominational community church and prayer room facilities on campus. For sports fans, Macquarie University has Australian football, cricket, rugby, soccer, hockey, touch football, Ultimate Frisbee and a driving range. The campus has an art gallery, a sculpture park, museums and theatre along with a library housing over 1 million items.

Accommodation

Exchange students have a wide array of housing options living on-campus or off-campus. Whether you like the great outdoors or taking in the historic buildings, Sydney, Australia has it all. Enjoy the beaches or take the Manly Ferry for only $10 to get around the Australian coastline. Take a stroll through the Queen Victoria Building where the biggest tree housed indoors in Australia resides during Christmas time. Explore the government buildings of Australia, the State Theatre or even the Sydney Aquarium. Want to see more than just Sydney? The Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport is 32.5 kms from Macquarie University. Make a weekend trip to see the Great Barrier Reef at the Hill Inlet located in north Queensland, Australia where you can snorkel or visit the nearby rainforest. Melbourne, Australia is a quick 824 km away from Macquarie University and you can enjoy more palaces, gardens and Australia’s premier cricket pitch. Macquarie University has a subway system that links the school to the rest of the city and all of the other transportation options to take you to the Sydney downtown area or other destinations in the Land Down Under.
