Trends & Strategies Conference to Feature More than a Dozen Industry Veterans

Trends & Strategies Conference - Register

The conference will take place on February 21st & 22nd in Orlando at the Peabody Hotel and features expert presenters:

Fall 2012 Ring Distinguished Speaker Series Videos Now Available

Are you interested in learning from commercial real estate industry veterans like Peter Rummel, Ray Sandelli and Jim Stine? Their presentations are now available on the Bergstrom Center YouTube channel. Presentation topics range from investment strategies to personal leadership and everything in between.


Dr. Kent Malone, Lecturer of Real Estate Studies, Recieves Teaching Award

Dr. Kent Malone, Lecturer of Real Estate Studies at the University of Florida, was recently given a Teaching Award by the Warrington College of Business. The award and nomination signifies excellence in all aspects of teaching and indicates that he is considered to be one of the best teaches in the College by the students as well as his peers. Created to connect students and potential students with UF real estate program graduates, the Nathan S. Collier Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE) program now has a dedicated Facebook page. Give it a "like" and feel free to tag yourself and others in the many photos that are now posted from the last several years.

Also, feel free to share photos on the MSRE Facebook page wall or email Pam DeMichele (pam.demichele at warrington.ufl.edu) photos of yourself and other friends of the UF Bergstrom Center.

MSRE Program Accepting Applications

We are currently accepting applications for the next class of MSRE students. The program begins in late June and now features an international study tour to Chile, in addition to a comprehensive set of core real estate courses and a broad array of finance, entrepreneurship, development, building construction, and urban and regional planning electives. MSRE students recently completed their ARGUS software training with Dr. Kent Malone, with a number of students opting to become certified in ARGUS Valuation - DCF.

Bergstrom Center Director and MSRE Students Represent UF at Industry Conferences

In October, Tim Becker, Director of the UF Bergstrom Center for Real Estate Studies, traveled to the ICSC Southeast Conference in Atlanta, the ULI Fall Meeting in Denver and NAIOP Development '12 in D.C. to promote the Nathan S. Collier MSRE program. Two current MSRE students, Randy Andersen and Caleb McDow, joined Tim for ULI's Fall Meeting where they networked with attendees and attended sessions.

Professor Ling Presents Research at UNC and in Germany

Professor Ling presented a recent research paper of his at the 4th Annual Conference on Real Estate Markets and Capital Markets in Mannheim, Germany on October 13th. The conference is hosted by the Centre for European Economic Research. The paper is titled "Credit Availability and Asset Pricing in Illiquid Markets" (co-authored with Andy Naranjo, a UF finance professor, and Ben Scheick, a finance professor at Villanova University). The paper examines the relations among asset prices, credit availability, and market liquidly in both the private and public commercial real estate market.

Professor David Ling was an invited presenter at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School's conference on Global Private Investing. The conference was held on December 7 in Chapel Hill, NC and brought together leaders in business and academia to examine the complexities of managing global private investments and strategies for maximizing return. Professor Ling's presentation was "Return and Volatility Dynamics in Public and Private Real Estate Markets."

UF and FSU Partner Again to Present International Academic Symposium

We are again partnering with the FSU Center for Real Estate Education & Research and the FSU DeVoe L. Moore Center, to organize the Florida State University/University of Florida Critical Issues in Real Estate Symposium.

This major research symposium will examine many of the underlying issues associated with the recent national real estate boom and bust. Approximately 40 leading scholars from throughout the world will give presentations and share ideas. The invitation-only symposium will be held April 4 – 6, 2013 at FSU's main campus in Tallahassee.

Q3 2012 Survey of Emerging Market Conditions Results

Survey Q3 2012

Optimism in Florida's real estate markets continued to improve in the third quarter. UF's Commercial Real Estate Sentiment Index, an outlook on our respondents' own businesses, increased for this quarter, while the investment outlook for Florida real estate improved to a new survey high.

Despite the optimism, however, there is still a cloud of uncertainty in the market place over the coming election and the effects of the fiscal cliff. These issues seemed to temper respondents' outlook for property fundamentals which declined slightly in occupancy and rental rates across most property types. Read the full report.
