Bergstrom Center Reception at the ICSC Florida Conference

The UF Bergstrom Center again hosted a reception at the ICSC Florida Conference in August, but moved to a larger, nicer venue, the Castillo de san Marcos Fort in the center of the Gaylord Palms atrium. This change allowed for us to accommodate the largest crowd in history – nearly 300 people networked and built stronger business relationships during the two-hour reception on the Thursday evening of the conference. The Bergstrom Center is grateful for the support of Bergstrom Council members Brian Carolan and Kyle Wood in coordinating this event. Visit the Bergstrom Center Facebook page to view event photos.

Q3 Survey of Emerging Market Conditions Results

Turbulence in the stock market and weak economic data continued to put downward pressure on real estate markets in the third quarter. The UF Commercial Real Estate Sentiment Index declined for the second consecutive quarter as respondents worry about the continued weakness in the U.S. and Florida economies and project a tough market over the next year. Continued weakness in the job market along with what our respondents' believe is excessive regulation of the banking industry are dampening their outlook on real estate despite a continued positive outlook on property fundamentals. View the Survey of Emerging Market Conditions page.

New Assistant Director Joins Center

The Bergstrom Center was able to add the position of Assistant Director in June, a testament to the continued fiscal strength of the Center, made possible by its numerous supporters and friends. Angela Betancourt comes to the Bergstrom Center from NAVC, the leading non-profit provider of veterinary continuing education, and previously Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where she held various roles in the marketing department. Angela will oversee Bergstrom Center marketing, branding and event management. She can be reached via email (Angela.Betancourt at or at 352.273.0312.

UF Bergstrom Center Real Estate Advisory Board Retreat

Held each September in Gainesville, this year's Advisory Board retreat once again brought students and advisory board members together for two jam packed days of innovative thinking and industry predictions focused on today's real estate market and the economy surrounding it. Two of the featured presenters, Dr. Sam Chandan, Chief Economist of Chandan Economics, and KC Conway, Executive Managing Director, Real Estate Analytics of Colliers International gave board members insight into past and future market conditions. Advisory board members were also given an update on various Bergstrom Center projects, many of which are funded by their generous support.

View Larger Photo MSRE students were invited to attend the entire retreat, which provided them with the opportunity to seek advice and network with board members, many of whom will likely employ these students once they graduate in the spring. Students also formally introduced themselves to the board in taped presentations that are now available on our website.

MSRE Program Adds International Experience

With global markets becoming more integrated and international corporations growing exponentially, the need for global business knowledge is vital for success. With that in mind, UF Bergstrom Center Real Estate Advisory Board member Jim Izzo is helping Professor Ling, MSRE program director, arrange the first ever international trip for Nathan S. Collier Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE) students. The entire class of 2013 will travel to Brazil with real estate faculty and industry professionals to learn about foreign business practices at worldwide corporations. They will receive two credit hours for this week-long immersion experience. Future MSRE students will visit other exciting destinations as part of this newly-formed degree requirement.

Ling Awarded George Bloom Service Award and IPFET Fellowship

Earlier this year at the annual meetings of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Associations (AREUEA) in Chicago, Dr. David Ling, McGurn Professor of Real Estate and Director of the Nathan S. Collier Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE) program, was awarded the George Bloom Award. The Bloom award is presented annually by the Directors of AREUEA in recognition of "outstanding contributions to the field of real estate academics" and for "distinguished service to the Association."

Professor Ling was also recently appointed to a three-year Fellowship in The Department of Land Economy at the University of Cambridge; funded by British Land and The Investment Property Forum Educational Trust (IPFET). According to Colin Lizieri, Grosvenor Professor of Real Estate Finance at the University of Cambridge, "the Fellowship was established as a mechanism for world class real estate academics to spend regular periods at Cambridge over a three year period to teach, study and help raise the profile of real estate research, both within Cambridge and more generally in the United Kingdom. "We are delighted that Professor David Ling will be able to visit the Department. His expertise offers tremendous opportunities for research collaboration with the real estate finance group at Cambridge and he will provide a global perspective on leading-edge property research for our students and the wider academic community."

Malone Now ARGUS Software® Certified

As the real estate industry evolves with advances in technology and more efficient practices, so does the MSRE program curriculum. MSRE students now have the opportunity to learn from an ARGUS Software certified instructor, Dr. Kent Malone, Lecturer of Real Estate Studies. ARGUS Software is the leading provider of software in property management, asset valuation, portfolio management, budgeting, forecasting, reporting and lease management.

Malone's knowledge and training provides students with the opportunity to gain experience with the complexities of the ARGUS Software products, as well as the credentials required to assist students in achieving certification. Adding ARGUS training to the curriculum provides an even greater competitive edge for MSRE students upon graduation.

MSRE Students Learn Real-World Strategies

The Nathan S. Collier Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE) class of 2012 has had a busy fall semester, which has included REE 6315 - Market Analysis. Led by adjunct professor Blaine Strickland (MARE '80), the students have been immersed in developing tools to help them define, analyze and compare trade areas. "The goal of the class is to help students better understand the elements of 'art and science' in market analysis, and they have worked through many real-life case studies that have helped them refine both their judgment and evaluative skills," said Strickland. In place of a final exam, students present their final team project analyses in a format where four different properties are examined by two teams each.

In addition to their rigorous academic curriculum, MSRE students attended several Ring Distinguished Speaker Series presentations this semester. Ring presentations feature industry leaders who graciously volunteer their time to visit campus to share their knowledge with students and faculty. This fall, the Bergstrom Center hosted the following speakers:

  • Mr. Paul Phillips, Executive Vice President, IDI
  • Mr. Martin "Hap" Stein, Chairman & CEO, Regency Centers
  • Ms. Debra Koehler, President, Sage Partners, LLC
  • Mr. Richard P. Donnellan, Jr., Principal, Apartment Realty Advisors
  • Mr. John Coleman, Senior Vice President, EastGroup Properties, Inc.

You can now view recent Ring Distinguished Speaker Series presentations on the new Bergstrom Center YouTube channel.
