  • Gao Cheng

    Bio

    Gao Cheng was selected to be a visiting scholar to University of Florida for one year by the China Scholarship Council. He is currently a second-year accounting Ph.D. at the Business School of Renmin of the University of China and co-supervised by UF professor, Jennifer Wu Tucker. He has published several academic papers in multiple journals and also served as a professional Certified Public Accountant. Cheng’s interests include financial reporting, corporate governance and financing. “Visiting Fisher School of Accounting from July 2014 to July 2015 allows me to broaden research thinking and build personal and professional relationships with brilliant American faculty. It has been a great research environment and I particularly benefits from learning diverse research approaches as well as new insights and perspectives about accounting.”

  • Jukka Karjalainen

    Jukka Karjalainen received his Ph.D. degree in 2011 from the University of Eastern Finland where he is currently a postdoctoral researcher. His dissertation “Audit Quality and Private Finnish Firms” was graded as excellent and awarded the dissertation award of the year 2012 by the UEF. He is visiting the ICRAA as a researcher from August through December 2014. He really enjoys spending time in Florida and meeting new colleagues. When he is not working, he enjoys playing sports and relaxing close to nature at his summer cottage in Finland.

  • Antti Miihkinen

    Antti Miihkinen arrived at the Fisher School of Accounting as a Fulbright scholar in August 2014. He defended his doctoral dissertation on corporate risk and transition disclosures at the Aalto University School of Business in 2013. Antti’s dissertation articles are published in several accounting and finance journals (e.g. The International Journal of Accounting). His main research interests relate to corporate disclosures and corporate governance. “I am fascinated by unexplored research questions around these topics. Fisher School of Accounting provides excellent facilities to dig deeper in these problems in a talented and friendly atmosphere”. During his PhD studies Antti also participated in the two-year University Teacher Education Program at the Aalto University. This activity has inspired him to write some working papers on accounting education topics with his colleagues. In his spare time Antti enjoys all kinds of sports. He has competed successfully in decathlon on a national level and also competed in international decathlon competitions.

    Bio

    Amin S. Sofla arrived at the Fisher School of Accounting as a visiting scholar in August 2014. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Umea School of Business and Economics in Sweden. His research interests include individual auditor characteristics, incentives and audit quality.

  • Christophe Van Linden

    Bio

    Christophe Van Linden is a PhD student at the Faculty of Business and Economics at KU Leuven in Belgium. He is currently a visiting PhD student at the Fisher School of Accounting at the invitation of his co-supervisor Dr. Robert Knechel. He holds a Bsc. and Msc. in business engineering, with a specialization in accounting and audit, both from the University of Antwerp. Prior to starting his PhD, he gained experience as an auditor with PwC. His research interests primarily relate to audit quality. Christophe also likes running and playing musical instruments and holds a degree of part-time music education.

    Like Jiang was a visiting scholar at Fisher School of Accounting from November 2013 to March 2014. She is currently a Ph.D candidate at ESSEC Business School in France. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in law, a LL.M in international business Law, and a Master’s degree in business administration research. Her research interests include auditing, corporate governance, and disclosure. “Visiting Fisher School of Accounting was a great experience. I developed not only research connections but also life-long friendships there.”

    Ashna Prasad was a visiting scholar at Fisher School of Accounting from January 6 to April 29, 2014. She is a final year PhD candidate at UNSW Business School in Australia. Her research interests include cross-border and group audits, consistency of global audit quality, economics of audit markets and audit pricing. “During this time, I took the opportunity to develop networks and share research findings and methodology with renowned academics in the field. The hospitality of staff and students at Fisher during my visit was exceptional and has resulted in many lifelong friendships.”

    Nadine Funcke visited the Fisher School of Accounting from Nov. 2012 - April 2013 and Nov. 2013 - Feb. 2014 as part of her PhD program at the Graduate School of Business and Economics at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Her PhD was co-supervised by UF professor Robert Knechel. Nadine currently holds a position as assistant professor at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University in the Netherlands. Her research interests are in the field of auditing and financial accounting and she has presented her work at international conferences, including the AAA, EAA and ISAR conferences. “Visiting the Fisher School of Accounting allowed me to build personal and professional relationships with highly talented faculty. It has been a great research environment, and I particularly benefitted from learning about different research approaches as well as new insights and perspectives about accounting.”

    Kris Hardies is currently assistant professor at the University of Antwerp (Belgium). He received his Ph.D. in 2011 from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. For his dissertation, “The Gendered Production of Audit Quality,” he received the KPMG Outstanding Dissertation Award (2012). He was at UF as a post-doctoral visiting research scholar from January 2012 through July 2012. While at UF, he especially enjoyed Florida’s nice weather and spending time at the beach, along with getting to know his colleagues better. He also likes reading (philosophy in particular), good food, and sports. In a later presentation to international PhD students, Kris advised, “Our goal as scientists is not to publish as many articles as we can, but to discover and disseminate truth!”

    Xiaobei (Beryl) Huang was selected to be a visiting student to the University of Florida for one year by the China Scholarship Council. As a visiting scholar to FSOA from September 2011 to September 2012, she started a research project about Chinese management earnings forecasts with Dr. Jennifer Tucker, her supervising professor at UF. “She was so patient and knowledgeable to teach me how to do research work step by step. I learned a lot more about myself in that one semester.” In her spare time, she likes singing and dancing. She is currently a third-year accounting Ph.D. student at University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

Seminar Visitors are experienced scholars visiting for a short term (one week or less) with a presentation to the faculty. She earned her PhD from Warwick University (UK) and conducts mainly empirical auditing studies, covering topics such as audit pricing and competition, the quality of external auditing, auditor regulation and liability, and earnings quality. Marleen has published in various international journals including: Journal of Accounting and Economics, Accounting Organizations and Society, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Accounting and Business Research, The European Accounting Review, Corporate Governance: An International Review, and many others. She is currently editor of Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory and holds positions on various editorial boards.

    Jigao Zhu was selected to be a visiting research scholar to the University of Florida from Aug. 2013 to Aug. 2014 by the China Scholarship Council. He is currently an associate professor of Accounting at University of International Business and Economics (China). He earned his Ph.D. degree from Peking University (China) in 2010. His research interests include corporate governance, debt contracting, and earnings quality. Jigao has published academic papers in multiple journals, such as Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Business Ethics.
