Freshman Business Leadership Symposium

Your Future Starts Here…

This annual event is a half-day leadership and professional development conference for 100 first-year business students sponsored by Warrington Welcome and Deloitte. This is an opportunity to attend different workshops hosted by organizations in Heavener and meet many first-year students!

The event will consist of Deloitte starting us off with their Business Chemistry presentation, followed by three sessions you will be allowed to select. Lunch will be provided and business professional attire is required.

You must be a freshman in order to be eligible to apply. The selection process is on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are due October 8th, at midnight.

The event this year will take place on October 25th, 2019 from 10:30 AM until 3:00 PM at Heavener Hall.

Career & Academic Peer Mentors (CAP) specialize in providing undergraduate business majors with professional career development to acquire great internships. These mentors are Heavener’s most successful third and fourth year students.


Association of Latino Professionals For America (ALPFA)

Unlocking the Power of You
To discover the ability to inform, inspire and communicate the power of you. At this workshop, participants will walk away with a better understanding of how the priority of their values impact business decision making and career choices. Through personal reflection, soul searching, and honesty participants will have better self-awareness and a more defined professional development plan.

The Association of Latino Professionals For America (ALPFA) is a national professional organization dedicated to develop better opportunities in business professions such as accounting and finance. Students may benefit from networking with top professionals and sponsors such as KPMG, PWC, and other key companies in the financial industry.


Business Ethics Ambassadors (BEA)

Ethics in Business Decisions
Join UF’s Business Ethics Ambassadors to evaluate the meaning of business ethics within real-world contexts. Through case study exercises, students will learn how to respond to ethical dilemmas they may face in their business organizations, classes, and internships, as well as their future careers.

Heavener’s Business Ethics Ambassadors develop skills in ethical leadership by engaging in programs to help raise awareness of the importance of ethics in business. This organization is comprised of highly motivated students committed to bringing ethics to their academic and professional careers.


Leadership Development Program (LDP)

Meaningful Mentorship
LDP will present to students how to choose mentors and create meaningful relationships with them. We are demonstrating different ways in which they can find mentors and take advantages of the resources in Heavener to gain more insight on finding mentors and developing mentorship relationships.

The Leadership Development Program enables and inspires participants to grow personally and professionally, pursue involvement opportunities, and establish a network through mentorship and experiential learning.

Emotional Intelligence: Self-Awareness
Why is Self-Awareness crucial in business? During this session, Actualize will answer this question and delve into the first Emotional Intelligence (EQ) competency: Self-Awareness. This competency is fundamental to EQ as a whole; before one plans to manage others, he must first learn to manage himself. As such, Self-Awareness plays an integral role in developing a wide range of a leader’s abilities. An interactive activity alongside a segment of thought-provoking reflections and discussions will coach students to become a more self-aware and confident professional.

Actualize is an organization that promotes the use of Emotionally Intelligent behavior to help students discuss and question their beliefs, values, and motivations in order to live a more purposeful personal and professional life.


Florida Leadership Academy (FLA)

Effective Verbal Communication: How to Win Your Audience
An often overlooked topic, informal communication is the basis of most professional relationships and it’s essential that you start developing these skills early on in your career. Join the Florida Leadership Academy to fine-tune your verbal communication skills and develop the confidence you need to tackle your next interview!

Florida Leadership Academy (FLA) is comprised of the top 100 sophomore students in the College who are selected to participate in this professional development training program. Each year, 20 students within the Florida Leadership Academy are chosen to serve as mentors to the next class.


Florida Business Leadership Society (FBLS)

Social Media Networking: The Do’s and Don’ts
The advancement in corporate social media recruitment has escalated drastically in the past few years. The executive board members from FBLS will highlight key techniques in maximizing your potential to use social media, especially LinkedIn, to distinguish yourself from other applicants. You’ll get the chance to test your knowledge on our social media “do’s and don’ts” to win a prize!

The Florida Business Leadership Society (FBLS) is a club for emerging student leaders that want to enhance their knowledge of all industries in business. FBLS looks to foster a sense of social and interpersonal expertise among members while developing a professional attitude, leadership skills and insight in the various fields of business. Many of our meetings include corporate speakers who lead presentations on their company and explain available internship opportunities. FBLS meetings also offer numerous opportunities to strengthen networking skills among peers and professionals. The organization takes part in various community service projects and social events each semester. Large events include the FBLS Student Opportunity and Achievement Retreat (SOAR) and the Faculty-Student Luncheon.

Florida Women In Business (FWIB) is a professional development organization that gives women the tools to succeed and break down barriers in college and beyond. Our vision is to empower women in a supportive environment and provide each member a unique experience. For example, our Mentor/Mentee program offers you a one-on-one relationship with a veteran FWIB member whose goal is to help you find your passion and be an advocate for your success. We also offer various committees that help you develop your strengths. Finally, we have inspiring speakers from prominent companies and the community who will offer their personal experiences and advice. Dr. Sevilla is the Associate Dean and Director of the Heavener School of Business. He has been in his role at Heavener for two years and with the Warrington College for 20 years, starting at UF MBA in 1998.

The Art of Storytelling
The Heavener Leadership Challenge, the premier personal leadership development program welcomes you to learn more about storytelling and how leaders can use storytelling effectively to drive change in the workplace, define culture and values, and create stronger workplace communities.

The Heavener Leadership Challenge consists of the top 50 sophomores, juniors, and transfer students in the College who are selected for a personal leadership development program. Leadership is Everyone’s Business and the HLC’s goal is to develop students into top notch leaders.

Do you not have much experience in technology but find it interesting? Have you ever wondered about the opportunities available at the intersection of technology and business? Get out of your comfort zone and grow in your technical skillset by designing website components in HTML with the help of Gatortech experts. No technical experience required, new programmer friendly!

GatorTech is a community of students interested in technology. You will learn more about current topics in technology, join projects with your peers to get tangible experience, and get connected with recruiters and internships in IT. Students from any major and background are encouraged to come!

Social Entrepreneurship
Social Entrepreneurs are willing to take on the risk and effort to create positive changes in society through their initiatives. Our Enactus chapter can help teach you how to make an impact by applying your business skills to come up with sustainable solutions to community issues. Each of us has within us an Entrepreneurial spirit.

Enactus is an international, nonprofit organization that works as a partnership between corporations and higher education to teach young people about business fundamentals.

Incoming students are guided by an experienced student who is currently in their junior or senior year. Junior & seniors in Business Undergraduate Mentorship Program (BUMP) have the opportunity to mentor incoming students.
