BABA General Studies Specialization: European Union Studies

The European Union Studies (EUS) area of specialization focuses on the origins and development of the EU from the initial pan-European movements of the early 20th century through the creation of its predecessor, the European Coal and Steel Community immediately following WWII to the present. Within this program the study of the EU is pursued from a variety of different perspectives and disciplines. Faculty offering classes incorporated within the EUSP include Anthropology, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, and Sociology among others.

The primary goal of the European Union Studies Program at UF is to provide an organizational center for all those across the campus with an interest in researching, teaching, and learning about the European Union. The European Union is extremely significant for business students; the twenty-seven countries of the European Union constitute the largest trading partner for the United States; trade between the USA and the EU currently accounts for approximately 25% of global trade. The EU is additionally the largest single market in the world and the largest source of foreign direct investment in Florida. More generally, the EU is America’s most important political and military ally. As a result of this global and local importance, students with demonstrable expertise in EU related studies will be more competitive for a wide variety of jobs. Their enhanced awareness and understanding of the EU will give them a competitive advantage across a broad spectrum of potential career paths.
