With a multi-party $85 million gift in 2021 that included what was then higher education’s fastest supercomputer, the University of Florida was positioned to become a leader in AI education. The strategic vision that followed would build on that foundation, creating an approach that could serve as a model for other institutions.

How that vision came to life is detailed in, “Building an AI University: From Infrastructure Gift to Systemic Transformation,” the inaugural case of the Warrington Case Series, a new collection of business cases from the University of Florida Warrington College of Business. The teaching case is intended for business, higher education and public-sector leaders seeking to understand how large institutions can move from technology adoption to organizational change.

The case explains how the 2021 catalyst of HiPerGator, higher education’s fastest supercomputer at the time, and additional investment support, spurred Florida’s flagship institution to create a university-wide initiative spanning teaching, research, workforce development and statewide access to advanced computing.

The University of Florida’s AI initiative has since prompted the creation of more than 230 AI-designated courses across all of its 16 colleges, the AI Across the Curriculum model, which aims to integrate AI instruction across every discipline on campus, and the hiring of more than 100 faculty focused on AI across the university, among other educational opportunities focused on AI.

While the first case highlights the overall catalyst and initiative for AI at the University of Florida, following micro cases will focus on specific leadership across the university and how each played a role in helping the initiative succeed at a large institutional level.

Published by Warrington Press, an imprint of the University of Florida Press, the Warrington Case Series provides clear and accessible insights into business challenges across industries. Spearheaded by Clinical Associate Professor Michael Carrillo, the Warrington Case Series joins a tradition of teaching cases developed at leading business schools offering evidence-based insights relevant to graduate and executive students as well as industry professionals.

“With the Warrington Case Series, we seek to bring a practical approach to business cases,” explained Carrillo. “In this series, we’re examining how organizations navigate transformative moments across business disciplines and beyond.”

Future cases, written by Warrington’s world-renowned faculty in collaboration with University of Florida faculty and Warrington doctoral students and alumni, will focus on real-world scenarios that help students and professionals practice solving complex business problems and making strategic decisions.
