Why students choose the University of Florida’s #1 online business bachelor’s degree

Two decades before most universities offered online business degrees, the University of Florida Warrington College Business saw the internet not just as new technology, but as a new classroom.

As more than half of Americans began accessing information online in the early 2000s, UF Warrington recognized the potential to deliver business education beyond Gainesville. It launched one of the nation’s first online MBAs in 1999, followed by its online business bachelor’s degree in 2001.

That early vision paid off. For four consecutive years, the University of Florida’s online bachelor’s degree has been ranked as the No. 1 undergraduate business degree program by U.S. News & World Report. Since 2021, it has maintained its presence in the top 2 programs nationwide, a reflection of both the program’s academic rigor and continued evolution.

The program’s success is rooted in several factors, including a perfected course delivery system, innovative student engagement opportunities and academic excellence. But one factor has allowed it to stand the test of time: continually meeting students where they are and anticipating what they’ll need next.

Meeting professionals where they were: The early online student

In the program’s early days, the online business bachelor’s degree student population looked different from what you’d find on campus. Many were career professionals in their late twenties to fifties, juggling full-time jobs and family responsibilities while finishing degrees they once had to set aside.

Pete Baksh (BSBA ‘12) had worked for several years in finance, but realized that in order to level-up his career, he needed to complete his bachelor’s degree. The University of Florida’s Online program was the right fit for him as a working professional.

“The UF Online Business Program was pivotal to my career,” he said. “It fostered lasting relationships, provided an extremely challenging and rewarding curriculum, and has opened doors that would otherwise almost certainly would have remained closed. As a senior finance executive, I frequently use skills and knowledge that have been built on this strong foundation.”

The new online student: Younger learners drive demographics in online business education

Today, though, the student population of the online bachelor’s program mirrors the students who are earning their bachelor’s degree on campus. Eighteen to 22 year olds fill more than half of the online degree classes, rounded out by students in their mid-twenties and up.

“We’ve seen a huge shift in the online bachelor’s degree population,” said Erica Studer-Byrnes, Heavener School of Business Assistant Dean and Director. “Earning a degree online has become much more normalized and easily accessible, and today’s students are flocking to take advantage of the opportunities available through an online degree.”

Studer-Byrnes attributes this shift to UF’s 25-year tenure in online education, continual enhancements to the online student experience and commitment to academic excellence.

“Each of these reasons all share a common thread,” she said. “We are constantly innovating the program and tailoring it to what students want and need right now. They are not only prepared academically for what comes next in their career but also have their education delivered and experienced in a way that works best for them.”

Beyond the virtual classroom: Building connection in online learning

Starting its online degree programs in the late 1990s, UF Warrington has had the past 25 years to build the foundation of its online learning platform and perfect course delivery. Having worked out how to deliver courses to online students, the college has had more time to focus on what else matters to students in their online degree program – the experience outside of the virtual classroom.

“No matter their location, students are looking for connection with their peers, their professors and their advisors,” explained Adam Jordan, Heavener Director of Online Programs. “We worked with our students to learn more about how they wanted to interact with others in the program and were able to build programming that enhanced their connection across the college.”

One such program is the Heavener Career and Leadership Challenge, a fully online, opt-in extracurricular career readiness program founded on National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) competencies.

Three years into its existence, the Heavener Career and Leadership Challenge (HCLC) has grown to serve 71 students in the program.

For Ayla Pate-Fajardo (BSBA ‘26), participating in HCLC helped her learn how to build her network, make meaningful connections and develop a strong professional presence.

“The HCLC experience truly sets you apart from your peers,” Pate-Fajardo said. “It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow in ways I did not expect. I gained so many valuable skills, and if I had the opportunity to do it again, I absolutely would. It’s an incredible way to enhance your degree and stand out!”

Virtual connection is only one way the Heavener team saw opportunities to help students form bonds with others in the Warrington community. In 2025, online students were invited to join their peers on campus for networking and professional development opportunities.

Claire Pokotylo (BSBA ‘27) found the on-campus online student events, like networking, career and professional development opportunities, to be a great way to get connected with her peers who live across the nation as well as the faculty and staff in Gainesville.

“The day trip to Gainesville is so worth it!” she said. “Overall, these events are welcoming, low-pressure and genuinely valuable for online business students at UF. Through these experiences, I was able to secure an internship with a company connected to a fellow student ambassador, which also helped strengthen my preparation for future internships.”

As online education continues to evolve, UF Warrington’s focus remains steady: deliver business education that adapts to students’ lives. Whether a working professional returning to finish their degree or a freshman pursuing a flexible career path, the University of Florida’s Online BSBA program continues to define what excellence in online education looks like.
