Aaron Hill, W.A. McGriff III Professor of Management at the University of Florida Warrington College of Business, is the recipient of the prestigious 2026 Scholarly Impact Award from the Journal of Management. Presented at the annual Academy of Management Conference, the award is given to the authors of an academic paper published in the last five years that has made the greatest impact on the field.

Hill’s award-winning paper, “Endogeneity: A Review and Agenda for the Methodology-Practice Divide Affecting Micro and Macro Research,” focuses on endogeneity, considered one of the biggest methodological challenges in management research.

“Endogeneity is a problem of drawing incorrect causal conclusions because of biases in research design or statistical analysis,” Hill explained. “Our paper’s insights show other researchers and consumers of research how to avoid conducting analyses that do not address the issue and/or drawing conclusions based on potentially wrong information that may result.”

Hill’s paper provides a practical framework that categorizes endogeneity into four causes, then maps each cause to the most appropriate research designs and analytical approaches.

By providing a common language and clear guidance for researchers, reviewers and journal editors, the study helps improve the rigor, transparency and credibility of management research, making it more likely that published findings support valid causal conclusions and can be confidently built upon by future research.

With this award, the paper has now received two selections for excellence from the academic community. Hill and his co-authors, Scott Johnson of Iowa State University, Lindsey Greco of Oklahoma State University and Indiana University’s Ernest O’Boyle and Sheryl Walter, also received the Sage Publications/Robert McDonald Advancement of Organizational Research Methodology Award from the Academy of Management for the paper in 2023.

“It is a real honor to be recognized for work that helps others,” Hill said. “Our goal with the paper was to do just that – to help researchers on addressing design and analyses issues and to help those who want to use the findings of research to have some hallmarks to look to.”

Hill is the second Warrington faculty member to receive the award from the Journal of Management, with Mo Wang first receiving the award for a research paper in 2017.
