The University of Manchester has a distinguished heritage that started back in 1824. It is the largest university in the United Kingdom, and receives more applications than any other university in the country. The university currently has over 40,000 students and more than 10,500 staff and boasts no fewer than 23 Nobel Prize winners amongst its current and former staff and students. Alliance Manchester Business School is the largest campus-based business and management school in the UK with 2000 on-site students and over 200 teaching staff. AMBS provides world-class business and management education and is a progressive school, delivering cutting edge business thinking and teaching. The 2009 FT Global Business School rankings rate the AMBS Doctoral Program as the best in the world. AMBS is ranked 5th in the UK, 12th in Europe and 32nd in the world. AMBS is also one of a select number of business schools which has achieved the 'triple crown' of AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS accreditation.

The City

Manchester is one of fastest growing and most culturally exciting cities in the UK with a total student population in the region over 70,000. Greater Manchester is the third largest conurbation in the UK, after Birmingham and London, with some 2.25 million inhabitants. For those daunted by the size of London, Manchester being a major city, is surprisingly compact. The University of Manchester and much of its accommodation are close to the very heart of the city and all that it has to offer. Travelling in and around Manchester is straightforward. The city is well served by a modern tram network and it has excellent bus and train links. The city is steeped in history and also impressively contemporary. There is a thriving China Town and the Curry Mile, the latter a buzzing concentration of Indian and Pakistani restaurants at the far end of the student corridor. In addition, the city is home to world famous orchestras such as The Halle and BBC Philharmonic, the famous Royal Exchange Theatre, the restored Palace Theatre, and many libraries, museums and art galleries. Manchester is also home to two top-class football (soccer) teams - Manchester United and Manchester City.

The University and Student Life

The university warmly welcomes exchange students and provide many opportunities to meet and socialize with British and international students throughout the semester. The University of Manchester campus is situated just south of the city center, placing it within walking distance to many of the area's museums, galleries, and social hotspots. Some popular student areas in the city include Deansgate Locks, Canal Street, Castlefield and Oxford Road. There are also many academic and recreational activities on campus to which exchange students have full access to. The sporting scene at the University of Manchester has something to offer everyone, whether you are interested in keeping fit or in competitive sport. As well as the recreation facilities on and around the campus, such as the Commonwealth Games Aquatics Centre, squash courts and fitness rooms, there is a broad program of organized activities.

Courses Available

Manchester offers a variety of business courses for students to choose from.

Undergraduate exchange students should only choose from the AMBS courses offered to exchange students.

The course listings are updated every year in April/May.

Academic prerequisites: All courses listed are available to students with a good level of Management knowledge. The home institution should approve the course choices and only recommend students capable of following the chosen subjects. You should be guided by indications of pre-requisites as shown on course outlines and should ensure that equivalent pre-requisites have been fulfilled.

Full-time workload: The full workload for the year is 120 AMBS credits - 60 AMBS credits per semester. Undergraduate exchange students should take six 10 credit courses per semester but are permitted to take a minimum of five 10 credit courses. A 10 credit course is equal to five ECTS credits. Undergraduate exchange students are not permitted to take less than five courses.

Semester one only students: Undergraduate students attending in semester one only are able to choose from a selection of semester one and full year courses. If students wish to leave in December and not return for the examination period in January, the home institution should complete the appropriate section on the course choice form supplied with the AMBS acceptance pack. These students will be given special assessment arrangements in place of examinations for their chosen courses in the form of coursework/essays, group projects etc. Some extended January deadlines for submission of coursework may be given and students will be advised on the submission process on arrival.

Semester two and full year: Students are expected to be in attendance for all examinations. Full year students are not permitted to take special assessments in place of examinations.

Students may stay in university accommodations or private accommodations depending on availability and/or preference. The University Accommodation Office will endeavor to allocate accommodation to students on exchange. Students are not guaranteed a specific hall or type of accommodation but can indicate a preference. Students can apply online for accommodation only after an acceptance letter from Alliance Manchester Business School has been issued with a UID number. Students may also chose to live independently, the university can recommended resources for private accommodation.

Travel Opportunities

Manchester is located in the geographical center of the UK and benefits from a modern and efficient transportation network. The city has two main rail stations which provide direct access to most major cities in Great Britain, including London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh. In addition, the Manchester Airport (just 15 minutes from campus) connects to 56 international destinations, making travel within Europe easy and convenient. When large city life gets overwhelming, students have access to some of the most dramatic, unspoiled and picturesque countryside in the United Kingdom. The Peak and Lake Districts, the North Wales hills and coast, and the Pennine Hills are all within easy reach for students to explore.
