Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Haldun Aytug

"I am currently researching how data manipulation affects classification problems. The objective in a classification problem is to find a function (called a classifier) that can determine the label of a data point correctly. For example, using the records of past applicants, a creditor can construct a function to determine whether a new credit applicant is creditworthy or not. Constructing a classifier is straightforward if the data can be trusted. Unfortunately, we observe data manipulation in many areas. For example, a spammer might actively alter an email to deceive a spam filter or a [online] seller might omit crucial information about a product on purpose to make a sale. Our research shows how to construct appropriate classifiers when dealing with data that is manipulated. "
