Program Overview

The Ph.D. program in Accounting trains students to conduct original research on accounting issues. Accounting research addresses substantive accounting issues with theories and methods drawn from disciplines such as cognitive psychology, economics, finance, mathematics, and statistics. Accordingly, our program offers a broad based interdisciplinary training that prepares our students for a career in academic research institutions.

Our faculty research represents a broad range of interests and research methods and strongly supports a program that features considerable flexibility, the ability to accommodate a wide range of interests, and fosters original and scholarly research.

We admit 3 to 4 new students each Fall. Applications are due on January 15 of each year. The program usually takes 5 years to complete and requires students to complete 49 semester hours of course work; pass a written and oral comprehensive examination in accounting; demonstrate proficiency in research and teaching; and write and defend a dissertation.

We look for students with strong analytical skills, business background, superior communication skills, and a strong work ethic. If your goal is to get a Ph.D. to teach, go to industry, or do consulting, then we are not going to be a good fit for you.

Our recent graduates have been placed at Universities, such as Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, University of California-Riverside, University of Houston, University of Oklahoma, and University of Kentucky.
