Approved electives are designed to enhance the student's graduate plan of study by allowing him/her to further explore an academic area of interest relating to his/her specialty. All graduate Master of Accounting students—whether in the combined 3/2 Program or the traditional M.Acc.—must complete a minimum of four credit hours in this area. Courses satisfying this requirement change every semester. The courses listed in the pdf files below satisfy the approved elective requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to register for approved electives during my University assigned registration appointment time?
No. Approved electives are offered by other academic units in the Warrington College of Business. Its registration process begins later in the term and is based upon a priority system. First priority is given to students who must complete the course in order to graduate. Remaining seats are then made available to other graduate students in the College and School who meet all published prerequisites. The date you may register for approved electives is listed in the pdf files above.

I registered for a module 2 (or 4) course(s) at the beginning of the semester, but no longer plan to take the class(es). How do I drop the course before the module begins?
A manual schedule adjustment period is provided to modify your schedule just before the beginning of modules 2 and 4. Because this process is manual, it is very time consuming. Students are strongly encouraged to make every effort to settle their course schedule—including for modules 2 or 4—during advanced registration using ISIS. Schedule adjustment dates can be found at the following link:

In the University Schedule of Courses I see more sections of a course than appears on the approved electives listing. May I register for these sections?
No. In much the same way that many accounting courses are only available to accounting students, access to sections not appearing on the approved electives schedule is limited to students in other degree programs. The approved electives list has been carefully developed to ensure you have access to as many sections as possible.

Why do some sections of the same course listed on the approved elective page have different prerequisites?
Occasionally, a section of a course will be developed for a particular program (e.g., a section of FIN 6545 Fixed Income Securities is sometimes offered exclusively for M.Accs). The special section will be designed to accommodate the academic background of students in a specific program. Other sections of the same course will carry different prerequisites. Students seeking access to these sections must meet all listed prerequisites.

Will taking a finance course listed on the approved elective page satisfy the finance requirement required of either the combined 3/2 Program or the traditional M.Acc.?
No. Although most finance courses listed on the approved elective page satisfy the finance requirement, some FIN courses only count as approved electives. These courses will be clearly marked as not satisfying the finance requirement. Note that any course used to meet the finance requirement will not also count towards the four credit hours of approved electives requirement.

I'm interested in taking a course not listed on the approved elective page, is this possible?
With an approved petition, students may complete courses not listed on the approved elective page. Typically, students need to establish a tangible link between the course and their career goals. Often the course fulfills part of a graduate minor the students are pursuing. Other considerations include: the course must be a graduate course, it can not be duplicative of another course the student has, in substance, already completed, and the course may not be an accounting course.
