JumpstART II: Going Solo
To be successful, artists need to be prepared to effectively address the broad range of challenges that lie ahead in their careers. They need to be dynamic, innovative and entrepreneurial... and above all reactive to a changing marketplace!
Like any other discipline, entrepreneurship is comprised of discrete skill-sets, strategies, and behaviors that can be modeled successfully. Much of this year's workshop discussion will focus on start-up issues, strategic marketing, and the use technology for the diverse community of visual and performing artists in the Gainesville area.
During the morning sessions, participants will be led by Terri Lonier, graduate of the UF College of Fine Arts and President, Working Solo, Inc (www.workingsolo.com). Terri guides individuals who want to start and grow a solo business. A pioneer in the solo entrepreneurial movement, she is the author of hundreds of articles, three audio programs, and five books. Her classic entrepreneurial startup guide, Working Solo, was named the #1 choice for solo entrepreneurs by Inc. magazine and "the free agent's bible" by Fast Company magazine. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Fortune, Business Week, Fast Company, Inc., Home Office Computing, and other publications, as well as on CNBC, CNN/fn, the BBC, and radio programs nationwide.
The morning lectures will then be followed by panel interaction hosted by successful local artists representing the visual and performing arts, an interactive roundtable activity involving all participants, and concluding with a wrap-up discussion.
In Terri's high-energy, interactive workshop, she will be sharing insights on how you can build a successful business, including strategies she has used in guiding thousands of solo entrepreneurs around the world. You'll discover:
- How to tame the time-wasters in your day, so you get more done
- How to establish pricing for your product or service that guarantees you profits
- Ways to use creativity instead of cash to market your company
- When to use in-person vs. online networking, and why it makes a difference
- The three things that will bring you more clients and customers
- The five biggest mistakes solo business owners make, and how you can avoid them
- Why artists have a secret advantage over other solo entrepreneurs, and ways you can leverage that ability
Introducing participants to local resources and like-minded individuals in the creative entrepreneurial arena, this workshop is being supported by the UF Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the UF School for Art and Art History, the UF School of Theater and Dance, the UF School of Music, the Harn Museum and Alta Printing.
