Financial Aid Information

There are several funding options available to students. Most of our students are on assistantships with the department but others have a private or university fellowship or are funded by their government to study at the University. For those students funded by the department, the funding is guaranteed for four years assuming normal progress towards a degree. In most cases, tuition is waived for students on assistantship or university fellowship.

Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

2007-2008 Academic Year

The University of Florida's Center for African Studies anticipates awarding Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for the 2007-08 academic year. These fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education (USED) under Title VI of the U.S. Higher Education Act and are awarded to students combining graduate work in any academic discipline with African area and language studies.

Fellowships are offered for any one of the regularly taught languages (Akan, Amharic, Arabic, Swahili, Wolof, Xhosa, and Yoruba) as well as for other African languages for which instruction can be arranged.

Fellowships provide a stipend of $15,000 per academic year and cover the cost of tuition and fees (12 credits per semester). Applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Florida.

Application and Instructions

Assistantships

Students that are on assistantships are required to work 13 hours weekly for the department. Some students are teaching assistants for the TV replay classes (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Managerial Economics). Others are graders for more advanced economics courses. Still other students are research assistants for professors from the department. In addition to hours as a TA or RA, students are required to proctor exams throughout the semester.

Awards and Travel Grants

The department strongly encourages students to excel in both the classroom and research. As incentives to those students who exhibit dedication to excellence the department has established various awards distributed throughout a student's career at the University.
