JumpstART, a program that empowers students in fine arts and entrepreneurship through collaborative exploration, discovery, divergent thinking and professional mentorship, is supported by the College of Fine Arts, School of Art + Art History, the UF Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the UF Engineering Innovation Institute. Special support was received this year from Duane Bray and IDEO.
Duane Bray
UF alumnus Duane Bray (MFA Digital Media, ‘94) ) is a partner at IDEO, where he heads the firm’s Global Digital Business. He joined IDEO in 1995 to lead and develop the discipline of interaction design, now one of IDEO’s most sought-after capabilities. Duane’s experience includes the development of major software and hardware programs and the integration of emerging technologies into human-centered products and services. He routinely explores the intersection of technology and people, revealing and elevating the emotional connections forged with digital media. Duane has led or contributed to scores of design projects, including product interaction, interactive exhibits, and software for desktop PCs, the Web, and mobile devices. His most recent endeavors have focused on larger clients and strategic programs, such as design-language initiatives that address a range of platforms and customers. He assisted SAP in forming a human-centered division for sustained innovation and has worked closely with Microsoft for more than a decade. His client list also includes AT&T Wireless/Cingular, BMW, Texas Instruments, United Airlines, and Xerox.

“Innovation is a very networked activity, now,” Bray shared. “To do it takes a different way of thinking.” Alumnus Duane Bray returns to campus to share his experiences as a partner at IDEO where he heads the firm’s Global Software Experience practice. Bray has trained executives, educators, and students on the IDEO method of innovation, enabling more people to think in new ways and unlock solutions to problems in many fields of interest and industry. This free discussion will explore how artists, entrepreneurs, scientists, and engineers are reinventing the processes and products humans use on a daily basis.

On Friday, February 22, Duane Bray will facilitate a group of students, faculty, and community leaders in fine arts, entrepreneurship, and engineering, leading them through processes employed by IDEO with a goal of creating a vision and design for life quality in an "utopian" Gainesville as early as 2020. Teams will explore strategies and benchmarks to make and measure strides towards realization of the developing community vision. This workshop is free and by invitation only. Post-workshop materials will be available to the public.
