Professional Speaker Series

Offered Fall and Spring semesters, the Professional Speaker Series (ACG3802) is designed to expose students to technical topics and emerging issues in accounting, business, and in related professions such as law. Guest speakers will provide a practicing professional's insights regarding technical issues and concerns affecting the accounting profession. Some sessions will relate to professional career planning, and the speakers will discuss various specialty areas, unusual occupations, unique firm practice structures, or non-traditional career opportunities. Presentations are followed by a reception during which time students can interact one-on-one with the speaker and his or her associates.

Attendance is limited to those students who have registered for the course or have advanced approval from the course coordinator. The course may not be repeated.

    About the Speakers:

    Mike Balter
    Partner, Assurance

    Mike Balter leads the Florida Assurance practice of McGladrey and is also the Firm’s construction practice leader for the Southeast. Mike has extensive experience working with construction, distribution and professional service related companies.

    Mike is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA), the FICPA Construction Committee, the financial counsel of the Association of General Contractors, the Construction Association of South Florida, Associated Builders and Contractors and servers as Director and Past President of the Construction Financial Management Association.

    Mike was the recipient of the 2003 South Florida Business Journal’s Up & Comers Award for the accounting division. Mike was also awarded the 2007 RSM McGladrey Achievement Award for Client Focus. The Firm bestowed this award on Mike for his exceptional commitment to clients and dedication to measuring his success as a professional by the level of success of those businesses his serves.

    Mike has been a CPA since 1990. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. He received his Master of Business Administration in 1989 from Florida Atlantic University. Mike also participated in the Business Advisors Program. This rigorous program is specifically designed for McGladrey by the prestigious University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, a world leader in graduate business programs. As a result of this high-quality education experience, our Business Advisors can think critically about your business and help you develop and implement world-class strategies.

    Gary Jenkins
    Partner, Tax Service

    Gary has more than 20 years of experience providing tax consulting, planning and compliance services to corporations, partnerships and individuals. He brings significant experience in multi-national business operations including both inbound and outbound U.S. investments. Gary has served a variety of clients ranging from complex multi-national, multi-state Fortune 100 companies to single entity, single state operations. Gary has served has the National Accounting for Income Tax (ASC740) Leader for McGladrey and currently is the Southeast Region Leader for that practice.

    In addition to his client service responsibilities Gary also serves as the South Florida Tax Leader for McGladrey. In this role he is responsible for managing the tax practice in four South Florida offices of McGladrey from a quality, staffing and profitability perspective.

    Prior to joining McGladrey, Gary was the Florida Tax Practice Leader for a national accounting firm and also spent many years as a Managing Director with a Big Four firm. In his role at the Big Four firm, Gary served as the South Carolina Tax Practice Leader for Consumer Markets and Manufacturing, Retail and Distribution. Additionally, Gary served on national tax technical teams for consolidated returns, accounting for income taxes and FIN48 as well as serving as a Quality Review Specialist for internal and Peer Review of other Big Four firms.

    About the Speaker:

    Joe Dowds

    Joe Dowds has more than 30 years of experience serving many of Deloitte’s largest clients, and has held a variety of senior leadership roles within Deloitte. He is AERS national managing partner – OCEO & succession; his responsibilities include leading OCEO succession planning and working with regional leaders to develop a national succession program for the ORMP and other client roles. He also oversees the Global Deployment Program and serves as the chief succession officer for practice management and AERS leadership roles. In addition, Joe leads the OCEO program’s activities in support of OCEO LCSPs and client teams, provides resources to assist with audit committee and management interactions, and oversees OCEO development programs. His role encompasses oversight and strategy for eminence activities, including the Audit Committee Symposium and Audit Committee Labs.

    Additionally, Joe is the advisory partner for several OCEO and ORMP engagements, including PSEG, SCANA, and Xcel Energy. He has served as the LCSP for four consecutive OCEO clients, including Energy Future Holdings, NextEra Energy, and Sempra Energy in the United States, and CSR Ltd. in Australia.

    Other leadership roles Joe has held include national utilities industry leader and audit partner-in-charge for San Diego. He brings a unique perspective from having worked and resided in all three regions of the U.S. organization and internationally in Australia.

    About the Speaker:

    Fred Scott

    Fred is the Americas Advisory Services Campus Recruiting Leader for EY. Fred’s primary responsibilities include the development of recruiting strategies for the US, oversight and implementation of strategic directives and program management for several Americas-wide initiatives and conferences.

    Fred began his career with Ernst & Young as an auditor in the research, development and manufacturing industries, where he specialized in the energy sector. After three years, Fred changed hats to assist Ernst & Young’s Inclusiveness Recruiting team.

    Fred received his bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Grambling State University, where he now serves on the Executive Advisory Board for the College of Business.
