Professional Speaker Series

Offered Fall and Spring semesters, the Professional Speaker Series (ACG3802) is designed to expose students to technical topics and emerging issues in accounting, business, and in related professions such as law. Guest speakers will provide a practicing professional's insights regarding technical issues and concerns affecting the accounting profession. Some sessions will relate to professional career planning, and the speakers will discuss various specialty areas, unusual occupations, unique firm practice structures, or non-traditional career opportunities. Presentations are followed by a reception during which time students can interact one-on-one with the speaker and his or her associates.

Attendance is limited to those students who have registered for the course or have advanced approval from the course coordinator. The course may not be repeated.

    Tamara Burks, CDR/CIR, is a talent acquisition professional at PwC; a professional services firm, which includes audit and assurance, tax, and consulting. Tamara works within the firm’s diversity talent acquisition team with responsibilities for the US firm’s disability and lgbt talent acquisition strategy.

    About the Speaker:

    Jim White

    Jim White is a tax partner in BDO’s Jacksonville office. He has more than 25 years of experience in public accounting. Jim joined BDO from The LBA Group through an expansion in Florida. He joined LBA in 1991 after his start with a regional firm in St. Petersburg, Florida, and was named a partner in 2002. He served as the Director of LBA’s Healthcare practice and oversaw the firm’s Business Accounting Solutions department. Jim provides his diverse client base with proactive, strategic tax and management consulting services. His primary focuses primarily on clients in the healthcare industry, but also serves clients in distribution, construction and retail.

    Jim is a member of numerous local professional and community organizations and has held leadership positions with several of them.

    About the Speaker:


    Jeff is a Director with Protiviti in their Internal Audit practice from the Orlando, Florida office. Jeff has over 25 years of accounting and audit experience primarily in the real estate, construction, and hospitality industries. Jeff has provided clients business advisory services, corporate governance, internal audit, and risk consulting services while at Protiviti. Prior to joining Protiviti, Jeff was a Manager in a Fortune 100 hospitality company in their financial reporting and internal audit groups. He also worked for Ernst & Young performing both consulting and external audit services. Jeff holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Economics with a major in Accounting from Lehigh University. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and also has a Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA).

    About the Speakers:

    Teri Sowder, CPA, Tax Partner

    Teri Sowder has been in public accounting for over 16 years, with the last two of those being with DHG Jacksonville. She focuses on pass-through entities with a concentration on private equity owned investments with multi-state and international activities.

    Ed Salek, Audit Partner

    Ed is an audit partner in DHG’s Jacksonville office. He graduated from the University of Florida, and currently serves large privately-held clients primarily in the manufacturing, distribution, construction, and services industries. In the community he is the treasurer of the First Coast Manufacturers Association while also serving as a Financial Matter$ mentor at the Jacksonville Women’s Business Center. He formerly served as chairperson of the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast Williams branch, and for fun he enjoys running, spending time with family, and Gator sports.

    Chelsey Dukes, Audit Senior Associate

    Chelsey Dukes is a Senior Associate in DHG’s Jacksonville office. She graduated from the University of Florida and currently serves non-for-profit clients, with a focus on employee benefit plans, and service industries. She is involved in the FICPA, Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance, and multiple DHG internal programs. For fun she enjoys spending time with her family, attending Gator football games, and being outside.
