Professional Speaker Series

Offered Fall and Spring semesters, the Professional Speaker Series (ACG3802) is designed to expose students to technical topics and emerging issues in accounting, business, and in related professions such as law. Guest speakers will provide a practicing professional's insights regarding technical issues and concerns affecting the accounting profession. Some sessions will relate to professional career planning, and the speakers will discuss various specialty areas, unusual occupations, unique firm practice structures, or non-traditional career opportunities. Presentations are followed by a reception during which time students can interact one-on-one with the speaker and his or her associates.

Attendance is limited to those students who have registered for the course or have advanced approval from the course coordinator. The course may not be repeated.

    About the Speakers:

    Ed Salek

    Ed Salek is an audit partner with DHG with 18 years of public accounting experience. He serves a variety of companies including many with multi-state and international operations. He regularly works with clients to successfully navigate complex accounting and business matters. Ed had the honor of being selected as one of Northeast Florida’s ’40 under 40’ by the Jacksonville Business Journal and is a graduate of the University of Florida’s Fisher School of Accounting.

    Paul Droubie

    Paul Droubie is a tax partner with DHG with 20 years of experience in public accounting with a Big Four firm. He has worked with a variety of public and private clients in the real estate, insurance and consumer markets industries providing tax consulting and compliance services, with deep experience providing services to clients in the real estate industry. Paul had the honor of being selected as one of Northeast Florida’s ’40 under 40’ by the Jacksonville Business Journal and is a graduate of the University of Florida’s Fisher School of Accounting.

    Jennie Muniz

    Jennie Muniz is an audit senior manager with 8 years of public accounting experience including service with a Big Four firm prior to joining DHG. Her experience includes serving a variety of private and public companies with deep experience in employee benefit plan audits. Jennie is a graduate of the University of Maine and had the honor of being selected as one of Northeast Florida’s ’40 under 40’ by the Jacksonville Business Journal as well as one of the top 26 CPAs under 36 in Florida by the FICPA in 2013.

    Chelsey Dukes

    Chelsey Dukes is an audit associate with DHG. She completed internships with DHG and a Big Four firm prior to joining DHG full time in 2013. Chelsey graduated from the University of Florida where she was actively involved in the Fisher School of Accounting and other campus organizations including service as Vice President of the Florida Business Leadership Society.

    About the Speaker:

    Phillip Z. Fretwell

    Phil is a Managing Director with Protiviti and is responsible for Protiviti’s operations in Florida and Latin America. He has over 30 years of accounting, auditing and consulting experience, including 19 years in public accounting and 8 years as an audit partner. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Florida.

    Phil received a Bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minor in computer science from Florida State University in 1982. He received a Master of Business Administration degree from Florida State University in 1983. He is a member of the American and Florida Institutes of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Internal Auditors. He has served as the Chairman of the Board of Junior Achievement of Central Florida and the President of the University of Central Florida Accounting Advisory Board. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Heart of Florida United Way as a member of the Executive Committee and the Chairman of the Finance Committee. Phil is also currently on the Florida State University Professional Advisory Board and is a frequent speaker on a variety of financial topics.

    About the Speakers:

    Jennifer Forrester

    Jennifer has twelve years of experience in public accounting. As a CPA and partner with James Moore, she provides accounting, audit, tax and consulting services for organizations, businesses, and individuals throughout North Central Florida. She has worked in a broad spectrum of industries, including: life sciences, technology, governmental, nonprofit, health care, auto dealerships, and religious organizations.

    Her specialization is in serving those affiliated with start-up technology. She has direct experience addressing issues unique to these companies, including inventory, debt, equity, and research and development. She is considered an invaluable resource to start-up companies because of her ability to develop solutions to strengthen controls and improve financial reporting. She holds direct experience addressing items specific to equity and convertible debt financing, stock options, and research and development grant accounting.

    Jennifer is a member of the Gainesville Area Innovation Network (GAIN), BioFlorida, Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA), and the North Central Florida Chapter of Florida Government Finance Officers Association. She is a Gator two times over, having graduated with a Masters in Accounting and a Bachelor in Business Administration from the University of Florida.

    Katie Davis
    Senior Manager

    Katie has more than ten years of experience in accounting. As a CPA and Manager with James Moore, she has worked with a variety of industries, performing accounting services for commercial and nonprofit organizations, as well as on employee benefit plans. Her concentrations include providing services for organizations affiliated with colleges and universities.

    Certified in Lean Six Sigma processes, Katie has engagements with commercial and nonprofit organizations, including one involving multiple operational, accounting, and IT processes with the University of Florida’s Department of Housing. Her combined backgrounds in accounting and human resources allow her to use her expertise in business aspects of a process while also providing insight focused on empowering employees through accountability and training programs.

    Katie is a member of the AICPA and the FICPA. She is a third generation Gator, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Accounting from the University of Florida. She is, admittedly, a Buck Eye too, though, having received her certification in Lean Six Sigma from The Ohio State University.

    Mike Balter

    As Partner-in-Charge of Marcum’s Florida Region, Mr. Balter oversees Firm services to all Marcum clients and is also responsible for operations in all of the Firm's Florida offices. Additionally, he is Partner-in-Charge of Florida Assurance Services and is a member of Marcum's Executive Committee. Mr. Balter joined Marcum in 2014 with over 25 years of client service experience in the construction, manufacturing, distribution and service industries.

    Mr. Balter holds an MBA from Florida Atlantic University and a BS in Accounting from the University of Florida, where he serves on the Accounting Advisory Board. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA), and the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) – South Florida. He is also a Board member and Past President of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) and is a committee member of the FICPA Construction Conference.

    Mr. Balter authored the Financial Management section of The Contractors Manual for Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and recently completed his term as Financial Counsel for the South Florida Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America. He also is a regular contributor to industry journals including Construction Focus, Construction Ink, and Building Florida.

    Louis Zaltsberg is Finance Director for Power Generation Services of Siemens Energy, Inc. He is responsible for the finances of the largest Regional Segment of the Power and Gas Business Unit, headquartered in Orlando, FL.

    Mr. Zaltsberg has forty years of Corporate and Operational Finance Experience. He has held assignments on three continents.

    Mr. Zaltsberg holds an undergraduate degree in Accounting from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and a Master’s Degree in Accounting from Florida Atlantic University.

    R. Troy Atlas

    R. Troy Atlas is a dedicated and motivating executive who believes in providing every opportunity for his advisors to develop as professionals and to provide clients with a complete array of financial products and services. Troy is currently Branch Manager and Senior Vice President, Investments of Raymond James, a position he’s held in the Metro Tampa branches since January 2004.

    Although Raymond James’ international headquarters is located in Pinellas County, Troy is Raymond James’ primary corporate liaison to businesses, not-for-profit entities and private clients in Hillsborough County. He has previous experience as a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Florida and is currently a Wealth Management Specialist, with more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. Troy’s experience includes roles in both management and marketing with Heritage Asset Management and AIG SunAmerica. Prior to joining the financial services sector, Troy served as an information systems auditor and consultant with Deloitte & Touche.

    Troy is currently serving as Immediate Past Chairman of Leadership Tampa Alumni’s Cabinet, as Treasurer on the Outback Bowl’s Board of Directors, as Immediate Past Chairman of Opera Tampa League’s Board of Directors, on the Straz Center for the Performing Arts’ Board of Trustees, on the Board of Governors for Tampa Yacht and Country Club and on the Board of Directors for the St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation. Additionally, he is a member of the CEO Council of Tampa Bay, is a member of the University of Tampa’s Board of Fellows, and is a graduate of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Tampa program, class of 2007.

    With regard to the University of Florida, he has been a Bull Gator since 1998 and a football season ticket holder since he was a student and subsequent to graduation from UF. Troy serves on the UF Foundation’s Hillsborough Regional Advisory Council, was recently named to the Warrington College of Business Administration Dean’s Leadership Circle and previously served on the Tampa Gator Club’s Board of Directors. While a student at UF he was a member of Florida Blue Key and Savant UF, and served as Student Government’s Supervisor of Elections, as well as on the Student Body President’s Cabinet as Director of Insurance.

    Troy is a Tampa native and currently resides blocks away from his boyhood home in South Tampa. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Accounting degrees from the University of Florida, and is also a graduate of the Securities Industry Institute at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Troy is married to his wife, Anne, originally of St. Petersburg, Florida. He and Anne have four children, each of whom they are very proud.

    R. Scott Thomas is the Chief Financial Officer of Infinite Energy, a leading independent wholesale and retail marketer of electricity and natural gas. Scott joined Infinite Energy in 2009 and has helped the company expand into new markets and continue growing its core business. Prior to joining Infinite, Scott covered the energy and power sector as an investment banker for Bank of America Merrill Lynch and UBS Investment Bank. Scott is a US Navy veteran, having served in the submarine force. He holds an MBA from Kenan-Flagler Business School at The University of North Carolina and a BS in Mathematics from the United States Naval Academy. Scott and his wife, Dorothy, reside in Gainesville with their two children.
