Combined Option for UF Undergraduates

Current University of Florida students can apply to the Combined MAIB option and, if accepted, they can begin MAIB coursework in their undergraduate Senior year. The MAIB program is then pursued full-time after the Bachelor's degree is earned.

Combined students are permitted to begin MAIB courses in the Summer B, Fall or Spring terms, and we allow overlap of the Bachelor and Master phases for just one semester, for two semesters, or for a full year if a summer term is completed.

If you choose to apply, you are encouraged to meet with an MAIB advisor to understand how the Combined option would work best for your particular needs.

Credits, Admission & Application

The number of MAIB credits taken during the "overlap" phase when you are doing both Bachelor and Master courses can vary between 2 and 12 (strict maximum=12), depending on the number of undergraduate credits that still need to be completed in that semester or year.

Even though MAIB courses are taken while the student is still classified as an undergraduate, courses cannot be taken unless proper admission has been granted by the MAIB program. The Combined option is considered to be a type of "honors" path for high-performing University of Florida students, thus we are more selective for this option than we are for non-Combined MAIB admission. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Thus, it is important for you to fully apply to the Combined option several months in advance of your desired start date. Most students apply in the final semester of their Junior year.

Timeline & Planning Ahead

We only permit undergraduate students to begin our MAIB coursework in their Senior year, or after at least 90 credit hours have already been completed in pursuit of the Bachelor's degree. Furthermore, you must have fully applied to the MAIB program and received an offer of admission. To plan ahead, the ideal time to apply to the MAIB Combined option is in the middle of or late in your Junior year if you wish to maximize the experience with all 12 graduate credits permitted.

Combined option students with an undergraduate major in a business subject (general business, finance, marketing, etc.) MUST complete all seven preprofessional courses before application. Those courses are:

ACG 2021C Introduction to Financial Accounting
ACG 2071 Introduction to Managerial Accounting
ECO 2013 Principles of Macroeconomics
ECO 2023 Principles of Microeconomics
CGS 2531 Introduction to Computer Software
STA 2023 Introduction to Statistics 1
MAC 2233 Survey of Calculus 1

It is also strongly recommended that ALL general education requirements have been completed as well so you can fully focus on completing your major requirements and being successful in the MAIB courses. The general education requirements are as follows:

Areas Credits
Composition (C) 3
Humanities (H) 9
Mathematics (M) 6
Physical (P) and Biological (B) Sciences 9
Social and Behavioral Sciences (S) 9
International (N) & Diversity (D) (3 credits in each
taken in conjunction with C, H, S, P, or B)
6
Total Credit Requirements: 42

Benefits

There can be timeline benefits to doing the Combined option. For example, if you take between 8 and 12 of our credits in your senior year and you earn your Bachelor's degree in May, you then only need to complete the summer and fall terms and you will earn your Master's degree in December. There are also financial benefits because of the double-counting of credits and the fact that undergraduate scholarships will pay for a portion of the graduate tuition.
